Just past our showcases we have our map room in which we focus on maps of Maine but we also have a vast number of maps which include Railroad, Civil War, the United States, and other miscellaneous maps. We also have a hanging display case in which we feature wall maps.

On the Verso. : UL hand written in pencil: From / J. Chance Jr. / Philadelphia, Penn / Please send a separate certificate for this / map / Robt Pearsall Smith / per W.O.S. / Kennebec Co / Maine. Lithograph. Four irregular sheets; overall 54 1/8 x 55 in., with very narrow margins. Unmounted. Outline hand coloring of townships in red with a little blue. Map was badly treated at some point in its life and now contains many expertly repaired tears and reinforced creases, several very small marginal chips, several slightly darkened areas, and 1 small 4 inch tear (see picture); still, in spite of all faults, in very good condition.
The outline hand coloring appears to have been very hastily done and is clearly only an indication of how the final colored and mounted maps were expected to appear. Original one of two copies sent to the Library of Congress as part of the copyright process. As such a virtually unique example.
